Wat Chedi Luang Wora Viharn, Amphoe Muang is one of the ancient and important temples in Chiang Mai. A legend goes that its old name is Chotikaram. There is no evidence of its construction; however, the legend suggests that there was Phra Sona and Phra Uthara that came from India who came to pay homage and was very faithful.

An Old Lawa man aged 120 years cook the blanket dipped in oil for worshipping; hence, the temple was called ‘Chotikaram’ meaning blazing Temple’. Some believe that it was built during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, King Mengrai the Great king of the Mengrai Dynasty to dedicate to his late father, King Kue Na.

The construction was completed in the reign of Three King Monument and it was named Ku Luang. In a later period, King Phra Chao Tilokarat expanded the chedi to be taller. The Emerald Buddha was then propitiated to be enshrined here for over. For a total of 80 years it was placed in niche oi Phra Chedi Luang on the east side for 79 years and in Phra Wihan Luang tor 1 year.

A large earthquake in B.E. 2088 caused the collapse of the summit of the chedi. This chedi is the grandest in Chiang Mai. Apart from Phra Chedi Luang, Wat Chedi Luang, the City Pillar is also a well-known place beside the chedi is the lnthakhin Pillar (city pillar), which was originally located at Wat Sadue Muang. When King Kawila restored Chiang Mai, he had the pillar transferred to this temple instead.
